If anyone wants to jump into photography business or just wants to take better photos for himself only, the basic and first question he/she gets is ‘Which camera should I buy?’ Generally, most people only know DSLR camera and they think that once they get that, photos will look better automatically. But that’s not the case. There are some other types of cameras as well. This post is regarding the same topic.
Based on working of the camera, there are two main types.
1. Instant camera
2. Digital camera
INSTANT CAMERA
This type of camera works just as it’s name suggests, Instantly. After the picture is clicked, we get print of that photo instantly. In these cameras, there is a provision for storing chemically coated papers just behind the lens. When the photo is clicked, the light coming from the lens falls on the paper and a chemical reaction takes place on the paper, due to chemicals present on it. After that the photo gets printed on that paper inside the camera and then the paper comes out of camera. So this camera gives direct print of the photo. Isn’t it amazing?
Then why just everybody don’t use this camera? Because of following reasons.
Disadvantages of Instant camera
1. Print quality is not bad, but not so good either.
2. The print size is limited and fixed.
3. The chemically coated special papers are costly.
4. Actually, we don’t want print, every time we click a photo.
Advantages of Instant camera
1. It is a fun to use camera. Because it’s a great experience to see the print of your photo, taken just before some time.
2. Everybody can enjoy the photo and see how it has come out.
3. It’s great for documentation purpose.
4. It is of real use in situations, where you have limited time and want to do a collage or something like that with the small prints.
5. It is available at very cheap rate (though the papers are costly). So it can be purchased as a fun to use toy.

DIGITAL CAMERA
As the name suggests, this type of camera works digitally. It doesn’t work with paper or film, but instead uses a digital sensor which converts incoming light into digital information, which is then converted to a photo with the help of processor in camera. That’s why it is easy and cost-efficient to use.
This also has some types as follows.
1. Point and shoot camera
2. DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) Camera
3. Mirror less camera
Now let’s see these types in detail.
POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA
This type of camera is easy to use, just point it in the direction of the subject you want to photograph and shoot. This camera has built in lens which can’t be changed but it has zoom capability. Using it you can take photos of distant objects. A tiny flash is also provided in the camera body itself, which helps in taking photos in low light.
This camera doesn’t have too many functions and settings, because it’s not a professional camera. But it has some fun to use filters, using which you can stylize your photos. Due to advanced technology, you can take good quality of photos with this camera too.
Advantages of point and shoot camera
1. Easy to use due to availability of less settings.
2. Easy to carry due to lighter body.
3. Fits even inside a pocket due to it’s small size. That’s why it can be taken everywhere, without any problem.

5. Provides decent quality photos.
Dis-advantages of point and shoot cameras
1. It has comparatively smaller sensor and thus it is not much useful in low light situations.
2. Due to availability of less settings, it can’t be used to learn photography.
3. The lens in this camera is fixed and can’t be changed. Thus the field of view is restricted in it, reducing possible number of creative photos.
4. The flash in it is of small capacity and external flash unit can’t be added. Thus the use of this camera is limited to basic photography.
5. The lens in the camera can’t provide blur effect in the photos, which may be a bad thing for some users.

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) CAMERA
This type of digital camera is known to all. It’s name reveals it’s working method. Actually in old days there used to be two lenses on a camera, one to frame the photo by looking through it and other to actually take the photo. But in these modern digital cameras, only one lens can do both of these jobs, Thus the term ‘Single lens’ is used here. And the term ‘Reflex’ represents phenomenon of reflection in the camera, as the incoming light gets reflected form mirror and prism. Thus these cameras are called as DIGITAL SINGLE LENS REFLEX (DSLR) cameras. These cameras are used professionally.
Advantages of DSLR camera
1. Bigger sensor ensures better photo quality.
2. Lenses can be interchanged, that’s why it gives you the ability to get different photos with different looks.
3. Blur effect can be effectively applied.
4. External flash unit can be attached, to get more flexibility of lighting the subject in photography.
5. Due to availability of ton of settings, photo can be taken with most possible control and editing time can be saved.
6. DSLR cameras can be used to learn photography.
Dis-advantages of DSLR camera
1. It is difficult to carry due to it’s bigger size.
2. The weight of DSLR camera is more. So, every time we have to ask ourselves, ‘Is it absolutely necessary to bring the camera with me?’
3. Everybody can’t understand the settings on DSLR camera and thus the use is constrained to limited people.
4. It’s costlier than point and shoot camera. Also the owner of DSLR camera has to buy various lenses after the camera is purchased.

MIRROR LESS CAMERA
As the name implies, this camera doesn’t have mirror in it. So when the camera is on, incoming light is directly falling on the sensor and we can see what’s happening in front of camera through viewfinder or screen. Besides this, this camera has same advantages as that of a DSLR camera like, availability of bigger sensor, blur effect can be applied, external flash can be attached, etc.
Additional advantage of mirrorless camera is that, it is smaller and lighter as compared to DSLR camera, due to absence of mirror assembly. It can be as small as a point and shoot camera. The size of the whole setup depends upon which lens you use on the camera body.
As the sensor is recording live data of incoming light, we can see at any time, what effect the camera settings are making on the final image. This ensures photo to be taken at proper exposure at the first place, saving the time in trial & error method.

So these are various camera types available in current market. But ‘which type of camera is suitable for whom’, is the question that has to be answered by the individual, wishing to buy a camera. To avoid confusion, just refer the summary given below.
1. Instant camera :- In this, we can get instant print of the photo, but it is costly. Due to smaller sensor size, tiny inbuilt flash and non-changeable inbuilt lens, there are some restrictions over the use of this camera in certain situations.
2. Point and shoot camera:- It is easy to handle and carry due to it’s low weight and smaller size. It can provide good quality images, but due to non-changeable lens and smaller inbuilt flash, it is not usable in low light situations. It is cheaper than DSLR camera.
3. DSLR camera:- It has bigger sensor and thus can take good quality photos even in low light situations. Lenses can be changed and external flash units can be attached to this camera, but this makes the DSLR camera setup an expensive setup. It has many settings to provide perfect photo in camera itself. Due to it’s bigger size and heavier body, it is difficult to carry and handle.
4. Mirrorless camera:- This camera is same as that of a DSLR camera, except the mirror mechanism, bigger size and more weight of DSLR. Due to interchangeable lenses and possibility to attach external accessories, the setup becomes expensive.
From all this information, you have now got the idea of working of different types of camera and their advantages and dis-advantages. But don’t miss the point that, all these cameras are best in their own way. It’s just that, every individual have to decide, which one is best suited to him/her, based on his/her requirement, use and budget.
